Columbia Area Zoo and Botanial Garden
Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is home to more than 2,000 magnificent and fascinating animals and one of the nation's most beautiful and inspiring botanical gardens. The lush 170-acre site features dynamic natural habitat exhibits, scenic river views, spectacular valley overlooks and significant historic landmarks. For more than 30 years, Riverbanks has provided individuals, families and groups with a common place to connect with and learn about the world's wildlife and wild places.
With more than 350 species from around the world, Riverbanks is the largest zoo and aquarium in the Southeast. A visit to the Zoo will play host to an array of wild adventures - from a diving expedition on a Pacific coral reef to a safari through the plains of Africa to an interactive Outback encounter with a flock of sociable lorikeets. There's so much to do at the Zoo.
The Botanical Garden boasts 70 acres of unparalleled beauty. Dramatic and themed gardens showcase more than 4,200 species of native and exotic plants, providing a living classroom for gardeners and non-gardeners alike and an ideal location for weddings and special events. In contrast, natural river views and valley overlooks in the adjacent woodlands blaze a scenic trail to historic ruins from the 1800s.
River and woodland trails measuring 1/2-mile run through the lower two-thirds of the property, allowing visitors an opportunity to view the naturally landscaped hillside and shoreline. Trams shuttle visitors up a 3/10-mile road to the upper garden area. A river trail leads visitors from the Saluda River footbridge along a paved path to the ruins of a pre-Civil War textile mill, the old Saluda River Factory. In 1999, a log cabin interpretive center was built that features important artifacts, descriptions and graphics revealing the site’s rich history.
